The Toughest Job in the World

I so truly appreciate my mom and all the mums and dads all over the world.  Being a parent is the toughest job, that I think, is out there; at least the toughest job I've ever had so far.

For starters, your employer, i.e. your child, is quite demanding.  I've had a demanding boss or two in my lifetime, but if I don't meet this little one's demand, I pay for it with no sleep.  I can deal with dickwads any day, but a non-sleeping child is a totally different matter.

I have had my share of burning midnight oil, more than I could really care to remember; but when the child is ill or suffering from some odd ill and ache, it's a whole new ball of wax. I never realized how much I have in me until I count how many hours of sleep (or lack thereof) the morning after.  Running on fumes - hah! I scoff at that.

Being a mum is such a great responsibility that every time I say something or do something I know that in one way or another it's going to mold the way this little one will think and act.  Sure, I choose to be crass and tactless at times (or sometimes I don't choose to be, it just happens that I am sometimes) but now, I have to be truly careful about my decisions as it will help set an example for her.  I don't want to raise little miss perfect (how annoying would that be?) but I also don't want her to turn out to be so misguided and jaded.

When she was only 2 weeks old and I was nursing her one night, I all of a sudden had such a great fear that I started stroking her hair and whispering in her ear telling her how I would like for her life to be perfect.  It'so daunting and so challenging to raise a little one.

I admire all the mums that have come before and set the way for us, this generation, to raise the future - yes, that's what we're doing, we're raising the future.  To you single parents, parents with multiples, parents with traveling spouses, and parents who just feel like you're at your wits end, we have the toughest job in the world, but I would never ever trade it for anything either.
